IRENE SURE GETS THE ADRENALIN FLOWING
altText
That dynamo named Irene that churned up the coast and wreaked havoc with our lives and continues to do so, remains a major thorn in our side despite being hundreds of miles away. Being a radio announcer, your purpose is to inform & entertain, especially when our lives are turned upside down, be it by Mother Nature or a terrorist attack or anything in between.
While many other businesses tend to shut down and wait out the emergency, radio shifts into high gear with the latest updates to keep listeners aware, informed & much less likely to panic, not to mention adding some music & levity to a situation that could easily become all encompassing.
Hopefully, myself and Paul Richards were able to ease your concerns qand make it a little easier to make it through a weekend plagued by difficulties created by IRENE.
It's really a major reason why we both got into radio. It's when the adrenalin starts flowing and you get that extra burst of energy regardless of how many hours you've been on the air or how tired you are. We certainly hope we made a positive difference in your lives.

IT"S TRUE! AGE IS REALLY JUST A NUMBER!
altText
So, TV legend, Regis Philbin celebrates a milestone 80th birthday today and each day adds to his TV legacy, not to mention his Guiness World Book of Records entry for the most hours in front of a TV camera and even though Regis has announce his retirement from his daily "Regis & Kelly" show, he has said he's certainly not retiring from show biz. He said that he'll continue to do other projects which perpetuates the attitude that is slowly becoming more prevalent; retire from
work, retire from life. Kudos to an exceptional man as well as TV personality who really proves to all of us that age is truly just a number!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOULD YOU BUY THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE FROM BETTY WHITE?
altText
Could one of the advantages in living a long and productive life be popularity and
trustworthiness. It definitely is for Betty White who was voted the most trusted and popular
celebrity personality in a poll of 2,000 Americans giving their opinions of 100 personalities
in entertainment, sports & news. She certainly is an example for all of us as far as not having to be sedentary long after reaching the age of qualifying to receive Social Security. You gotta admire
her vitality and enthusiasm and wanting to be relevant in her field perhaps to the century mark, much like celebrities such as George Burns and Bob Hope before her. Come to think of it, if
Betty White approached me about buying the Brooklyn Bridge, I would really feel compelled to,
at least, think about it.Care to go in with me ?

JUST MY OPINION, i COULD BE WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!
altText
TV shortens life by 22 minutes per viewing hour. So says a study conducted by the University of Queensland, Australia which compared the tv viewing habits of 11,000 Aussies.
Results showed that those who spent an average of 6 hours per day watching the boob tube,
can expect to live 4.8 years less than non TV watchers. The reasons were thought to be mind-less eating in front of the TV and less time spent exercising since TV dominated their free time.
This, in turn, led to higher average weight and higher blood pressure. This brought me to the unbiased and unsubstantiated conclusion that radio listening on the other hand was a more functional way to go since radio listening allows you to be doing other things, like exercising, which
would lead to lower average wights and lower blood pressure and getting more accomplished while doing this multi-tasking.........Thanks for hearing out my rant... In the words of comedian,
Dennis Miller, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!!!!!!!!!!

LOVE THOSE PERKS
altText
One of the perks of being a radio dj is that you sometimes have the opportunity of meeting or interviewing famous singers, musicians and other personalities. Such was the case this afternoon as I had the opportunity via phone to talk to veteran drummer, D.J. Fontana, known for his 14 year association with Elvis, banging the drums with the King of Rock n' Roll on some 460
tracks, a gig that eventually landed him in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame as one of the best sidemen. We chatted on the air about the old days with Elvis and talked about the big "Elvis Tribute
Spectacular'' which he will be part of this Friday night at the NYCB theatre at Westbury at 8 pm along with Steve Mitchell, Shawn Klush. Donny Edwards, Rick Virga & the Sweet Inspirations.
By the way tickets are still available online at livenation.com, charge by phone at 1-88-745-3000 or
the NYCB Theatre at Westbury box office. You needn't be lonely Friday night as memories will
dominate Friday evening.

COMFORT FOOD EUPHORIA?
altText
So, it's been drummed into our heads that America is dealing with an obesity crisis since Two-Thirds of Americans are either obese or overweight...So, why are they serving fried
butter sticks cooked in a cinnamon roll batter at this years Iowa state fair, better known as the heart attack special, since they contain more calories and saturated fat than you can shake a stick at.
Another, study conducted by MSNBC stated that some 50% of Americans eat a hamburger at least
once a week, up from 38% just 2 years ago despite the saturated fats and calories. So what gives? Do Americans have a death wish? Not really. A couple of conclusions can be drawn.
One is that these high calorie, high fat foods are just cheaper and in these difficult economic times people want to save as much money as they can, it unfortunately is a little more expensive to eat healthier, but also these artery clogging delights are so called comfort foods which make us
feel better and forget about our economic woes. So, I'll end this little rant by saying pass the pizza and make sure you top it off with a burger and a fried butter stick. Let's all reach comfort food euphoria!!!!!!!!!!

THE TIME TO EXERCISE EXCESS CAUTION
altText
The National Traffic Safety Administration has long reminded us that the 4th of July is
the day when more traffic fatalities take place on our roadways than any other day. However,
you probably aren't aware that this very month of August is the month when the most deaths occur across our nations highways. So, forewarned with this information is to be forearmed.
It's especially important now to pay full attention to driving and to put down every mobile device. After all, since experts have pointed out, we're already multi-tasking behind the wheel and it's impossible to be talking, texting, eating, etc. behind the wheel and still be a competent
driver. Let's avoid the temptation to be doing something else while driving and make the reainder of the summer season a safe and happy season by changing those dysfunctional
motoring habits for good.

WHAT A WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!
altText
Last month, we learned that drinking red wine may help prevent bone loss and muscle atrophy and this month comes a study out of the University of California that found that moderate amounts of dark chocolate led to hea;thier muscle deVelopment and more stamina in a reserach study involving mice, not to mention the anti-oxidants, lower rates of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems that dark chocolate has previously been shown to improve. I mentioned on the air today that it brings to mind the Woody Allen movie that pointed out that everything that was once thought to be bad for humans has since been proven to be good for us. Of course, a lot more research needs to be done and of course,
everything in moderation, but for now, I'm out the door to buy a bottle of red wine and a
few bars of dark chocolate. Oh, the anti-oxidants and flavinoids. WHAT A WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AS IN SPORTS, MAKE IT GUYS AGAINST GUYS AND LADIES OPPOSING LADIES
altText
Obviously a travesty on American Idol last night on Fox, America's most watched
primetime TV show. With the overwhelming majority of voters being teen and pre-teen girls voting
for whom they feel is the most appealing male candidate, it left probably the most talented of the bunch, Queens' Pia Toscano out of the competition. Since it is most likely too late to rectify this
ridiculous injustice, why not avoid this problem in the future by being gender specific each season.
One year pit the male candidates against one another with the following year the females opposing one another, thereby allowing the female contestants to get their just due. It's done
continually in sports competitions so why not on Idol? Another problem solved by my less than
average intelligence quota!!!!!!!What say you?

BIG NEWS FOR DODGER/BASEBALL FANS
altText
Famed actor, Robert Redford, finally has his next role in tow and for baseball fans
and Dodger fans, like myself in particular, this is a must see. Robert Redford is all set to portray
Branch Rickey, the famed Dodger executive who signed Jackie Robinson to be the first African-American player in Major League baseball which essentialy allowed the signing of the exceptional
black players en mass and gave us all the opportunity to see the cream of the crop play the sport.
Jackie Robinson was hand picked by Rickey to be the first black in the majors because of his temperment and the ability to take unwaranted verbal abuse without lashing back.
That, in addition to his on field talents, made Jackie a one of a kind player who's legacy will live on
for not only decades, but centuries. I'm glad to see Robert Redford portray Branch Rickey, who
like Jackie Robinson was one of a kind. I'm sure Mr. Redford will bring the same intensity in
portaraying Rickey as he did in playing the role of Roy Hobbs in "The Natural'. This movie will
certainly be a snapshot in time of the unfair racial bias that existed and hopefully the movie will show the benefits of allowing the best to play. It will certainly be an eye opener for much of the younger generation. Hopefully, the article in the Los Angeles Times is factual and we'll all get
to view the educational and entertainment value of the movie!!!!!Are you looking forward to this
release?

LONG HOURS OR SIESTA TO BREAK UP THE WORK DAY
altText
It's long been a fact of life in America that putting in longer hours at work will get you ahead in life. Now comes a detailed study out of Britain that shows that those individuals who
worked up to 11 hours a day instead of the usual 8 hours per day increased their risk of heart disease by some 67% or two thirds. My initial thought was maybe we in America should mimic the way the work day is handled in Europe and South America and much of the rest of the world.
If we took a siesta for 2 or 3 hours in the middle of the work day, we may well, not only refresh and
re-charge the batteries, so to speak, thereby working more effectively, but, also reduce the incidence of America's # 1 killer, heart disease. Too much work and not enough play makes
Johnny a dull boy? What do you think?

7 YEARS OF FRUSTRATION ENDS FOR KNICKS FANS
altText
Knick fans have endured some bad basketball from what once was a premiere NBA franchise but the 7years of less than stellar basketball has come to an end and it may well be the start of at least 7 consecutive years of playoff basketball for what was once a proud franchise.
It looks like a re-birth at MSG as the superstar talents of Amari Stoudemaire team up with former Syracuse star and NBA All Star, Carmelo Anthony. So with the Knicks guaranteed to be in the playoffs, the next question is will be the opponent be the Celtics or the Heat, both arch rivals.
Either way, the Knicks will be underdogs and I'm thinking small steps. Even if they don't make it into round 2 of the playoffs this year, as the old Brooklyn Dodgers would say, just wait till next year.
So, what do you think Knicks fans? Happy just to be in the playoffs or do you expect more?

AMERICAN IDOL IS BACK
altText
It's the show that transcends generations with a grandmom, a mom and the her kida all watching the same show intently, something that doesn't happen very often in the world of tv viewing. It's the return of the actual competition on Fox's "American Idol" with 13 competitors vying for the coveted title and accompanying record contract..For many people, especially the kids, it's the appeal of picking your particular favorite with the actual singing talent sometimes taking a backseat to the sex appeal or cuteness of the contestants..That aspect aside, it is a fun hour or two of tv viewing, checking out some of today's talented singers.
Last week, I mentioned on air that Jacob Lusk was the most talented of the current lot
and after last night, I'm sticking to that, despite giving what I thought was a sub-par performance.
Someone must be eliminated tonight anf my choice would be Paul McDonald who performed
"Tell Me That You Love Me" by Ryan Adams. Did you catch last night's performance. Who do you think will be shunted aside tonight? Let me know. i'll see you in front of the tv at 8 tonight on Fox 5,

SANTA CLAUS & THE EASTER BUNNY NOT IMMUNE TO RISING COSTS
altText
With an unusually severe winter affecting much of the country and turmoil abroad in some of the oil producing countries, we have and will continue to see in a rise in prices in food,
clothing and other essentials. Looking down the road, this will certainly mean less spending by
the average consumer and even St. Nick is bound to be affected in his gift giving. Now comes word that the price of chocolate could rise by as much as 20% next year since there is unrest in some of the cocoa producing countries of Africa and there is greater demand for cocoa since more is needed to make the dark chocolate that so many people covet..So, now, in addition to Santa Claus, it looks like the Easter Bunny's deliveries may well be curtailed.
The question that must be asked is whether or not these 2 holiday icons having to cut back on their generous ways will lead to protests in the street and ultimately the unseating of the government. Probably not, but St. Nick & The Easter Bunny aside, it could and probabnly will make it tougher to come out of the recession. HEY WAIT! I just had a thought. How about electing the Easter Bunny & ST. Nick to political office. Maybe they could right our ship. Just a thought!
What are yours?

and to many osBETTER TO BE LUCKY OR TALENTED?
altText
So, TV personality, for lack of a better term, Paris Hilton, has just turned 30 and to many of us, she is a media created sensation who basically doesn't work at a conventional occupation.
However, that doesn't stop her from asking and often getting a 5 or 6 figure salary for a personal appearance and a perk she'll have for life is free hotel housing since she had the good fortune of being born into the Hilton Hotel chain family. So, the question I pose to you is it better to be lucky,
(as in the case of being born with the proverbial silver spoon in your mouth) or is it better to be talented and work your way through to financial securirty. I think I know what Paris Hilton would say but I'd love to know your take on this....Drop me a line!

IT'S O.K.-REMEMBER, IT'S AFTER HOURS
altText
So, after having dinner with friends one night, recently, I stopped at the local ATM
to replenish my wallet. I parked in the area designated for parking about 100 feet or so away.
As i was walking to the building, a cop pulled up in his patrol car and parked about 15-20 ft. from the ATM in the designated fire zone area, clearly marked as a no parking area which would result in the ticketing of the violator, according to a sign on each side of the path. As I was walking to the ATM, the officer asked me if I parked in the designated parking lot because I saw him drive up in the patrol car. I said no, I always park in the designated lot, even though it's further away because
I didn't want to get in the way of firemen should there be a fire. He said that if there were a fire, I
wouldn't stay in the building and it would just be a matter of seconds before I move my car. So,
here I am, obeying the law to a tee and a police officer is literally encouraging me to break the law.
As i was driving home, I thought to myself, if that was the justification, since it is after hours,
why not take the conept further. Imagine driving through stop signs or red lights later at night because you didn't see any other vehicles. We've all been in situations where cars & trucks come out of nowhere and with this kind of thinking, there would be a lot more accidents, deaths & injuries.
So, what do you think? Should we be able to do whatever we want, depending on the time of day, or are the laws established for our benefit? I would loooooooove to hear your thoughts.
Remember though, if you agree with the police officer, we've got to change our slogan from the
'LAND OF OPPORTUNITY" to the 'LAND OF CHAOS"...

FLOSSING; AN UNECESSARY INCONVENIENCE OR A LIFESAVER
altText
A new research study that came out today in which dentists were questioned about their patients' flossing habits contained some startling results; that only about 10% of their patients flossed on a regular basis. This is scary since the plaque found in between teeth is the same plaque found in the arteries that leads to heart disease and stroke. The famed Dr. Oz adds
that if you don't brush & floss before going to bed, the bacteria in your mouth will have a "party",
causing that unpleasant mouth odor that we all want to avoid. So, the question I pose to you, is
whether it is worth it to spend the extra time brushing & flossing or would it be a kinder & gentler gesture to let the bacteria have their party and worry about the heart disease and potential tooth loss later on. After all, it is good to think of others, even if they are only lowely bacteria.

THE PRESIDENT-THE ULTIMATE ROLE MODEL?
altText
You might have caught the first lady, Michelle Obama making the rounds of the morning talk shows plugging her initiative of healthier eating for kids. However, it was something else that she mentioned that piqued my interest. She said that husband and Commander-in-Chief, Barrack Obama had not smoked a cigarette for a year. Now we've all known for years that cigarette smoking has numerous consequences;but, pyschology teaches you to never tell a person what they alrerady know. Could it be that Mr. Obama, while in office, decided he would be the ultimate role model since he posseses the highest position in the country. If so, you have to admire his determination since cigarette smoking was certainly a stress releiver for what may be the most stressful job in the world.jJust a thought!!!!!!!!!What do you think? Drop me a thought.

Putting off retirement key to longevity?
altText
So Regis Philbin has decided to put off reirement from the "Regis & Kelly" show for a few extra months passed his announced retirement in August which would have coincided with his 80th birthday. Not surprisingly, since ABC would love to continue to have the ratings that Regis
delivers. What is more surprising is that Regis has no intention of retiring from show biz. He's just
retiring from his current show. In a country where people can't wait to accumulate enough money
so they can retire as young as possible, this certainly goes against the grain. However, psychological studies worldwide have long shown that people who live long, healthy lives all have a purpose with many of them continuing to do some kind of work. In America, retirement often is associated with leisure but studies are indisputable. The brain needs to be engaged to prosper.
Of course, this would be a major change & disappointment to many Americans who strive for a life of leisure. Personally, I'm planning to live till I'm 118 years old and work full time until 100. A penny, or even a dollar, for your thoughts on this topic.

National Sickie Day
altText
Have you heard, our staunch allies, the British have established a non-tradittional
day that may have appeal to a number of Americans as well as others abroad. They're declaring the firsr Monday in February as "National Sickie Day' which basically means that people are calling in sick to the tune of some 350,000 workers, costing employers millions of dollars in lost productivity. As if that weren't enough, many of them aren't even speaking to a supervisor or department head. They are calling in sick via e-mail and texts thereby avoiding the process of having to sound as bad as you supposedly feel.It seems that British employers are far more trusting than their American counterparts.
So what is an average American to think? Is this a progessive idea or should British employers head over to the nearest psychiatric facility for an emergency check-up.
As an employee who wouldn't want an extra day off but I gotta beleive there's a better way to do this. How about calling it the "National Re-charge the Batteries Day" in which we could, at least,
pretend that we're taking a much needed day of rest and will come back even stronger and more productive in the coming days. What do you think? Inquiring minds want to know!

Super Bowl; to be there or be square
altText
This Sunday, of course, is "Super Bowl Sunday", the most viewed tv event in
America According to the web site, FanSnap.com, tickets for the big game are averaging $5,082,
a huge hike from their face value of $ 600-1200 and way up from last year's average of $ 3,034.
The big increase in secondary prices is due , it's beleived, to an improving economy and a fan base of both teams that is willing to travel. A cheaper way would be to buy standing room tickets,
starting at $ 2,200 apiece, still far too pricey for me, especially considering Dallas just received as
much as 6 inches of snow in the area which was preceded by a massive ice storm earlier this week. I'm thinking for that kind of moolah, I would at least get to walk around in tropical conditions.
That brings me to the point of this blog. In this day of big screen, hi definition TV's, is it
all that important to be at these major sporting events or does high resolution TV eliminate the need for that. It seems to me that the sole reason people pay these exorbitant ticket prices and air fare is to say that were at the game. I don't think thats necessary since a few years from now I'll probaby engage in a little white lie and say I was actually there much like the commercial where a group of men say they were at every Super Bowl since 1967! Yeah, right! After all, nobody gets hurt and I save lots of cash. What do you think? Is there any reason to pay these ridiculous prices for a game that often times is neither competetive nor enjoyable. What do you think? Drop me a thought.

Vegetables; good for the inside as well as the outside
altText
According to a new British study at the University of St. Andrews in which 2 equal groups of U.K. Caucasians and black South Africans were asked to adjust the coloring of a series of portraits until the faces looked healthy, the participants actually made the photos slightly more pale in skin tone and added a much greater amount of yellow to the pictures. Researchers
concluded that by adding more fruits and vegetables to their diets, participants actually were
able to make their skin more yellow in color and therefore more healthy looking. Orange, yellow and red fruits and leafy green vegetables contain carotenoids that act as skin pigments to turn your skin more yellow, even only consuming 3 or 4 servings per day.
I decided to put this to the test but I think I had a few too many servings of the green, leafy veggies since my skin now resembles that of the "Incredible Hulk". At first I was somewhat upset, but looking at the bright side, I'm all ready for St. Patrick's Day next month.
Seriously, though, will this study change your attitude toward eating vegetables since
in our "vain" society, we seem to treasure more what shows on the outside rather than the inside.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY a.k.a. HEART ATTACK SUNDAY
altText
So, here it is on the verge of Super Bowl Sunday, a day celebrated by both the football and non football fan, mainly because it'a day for people to get together, party and pig out on their
favorite, mostly forbidden junk foods. Wouldn't you know it, now comes word that this most looked
forward to day of indulgence may well be killing us. A study published in the journal of Clinical
Cardiology this week focused on the death records in Los Angeles County for the day of and two
weeks after the 1980 and 1984 Super Bowls with the local teams involved in both games.
The study showed that heart related deaths rose by 15% among men and 27% among women
after the 1980 Super Bowl in which the hometown Rams were overcome by a late Pittsburgh Steeler rally that did in the local team. Meanwhile, in 1984, the hometown L.A. Raiders easily beat the Washington Redskins and tha cardiac rate did not increase at all..
The results caused researcers to conclude that the stress of the game caused viewers sharp increases in in both heart rate and blood pressure which can be fatal to those with heart disease. It was also shown that enormous amounts of fat and alcohol during the game could trigger a heart attack...Thus, we submit for your consideration, alla Rod Serling, would it be best to indulge in mainly heart healthy fruits and vegetables this SUPER BOWL SUNDAY and have a "whatever"
attitude toward the game or is it better to say Super Bowl Sunday comes just once a year and
hope and pray to God that we come through o.k. I'm kinda on the fence on this one. My mind says
do the right thing, don't stress and eat healthy while my stomach screams"indulge me, baby"!!!!!
What are you thoughts? Either way, I won't stress out.

Another weekday, another Oprah challenge
altText
In another attempt to outdo what she has done as a show topic in this final year on commercial TV and to raise the awareness of her audience, Oprah has embarked on a one week venture into veganism(strict vegetarianism) along with 378 of her staffers at Harpo Productions.
This is no easy undertaking since it not only eliminates eating meat but also anything that is an animal by-product, including all dairy. This challenge is based on a book by vegan author Kathy Freston and also influenced by actress, Alicia Silverstone, who has become a vegan in receny years and has raved about the benefits
So whaddya think? Is Oprah doing all this as a ratings ploy strictly or do you really think she
is doing this for the benefit of her viewers or perhaps a little of both. I'm going to grab a burger while I await your response!

To be warm or to be cool, that is the question
altText
While doing some shopping at the local supermarket last night, there were a group of teenagers that walked in wearing shorts and either sneakers or sandals, sans socks. Mind you, the temperatures were in the 20's and there was a stiff wind. As I tried to imagine what possessed these kids to dress so inappropriately, I remembered the article in Newsday a couple of weeks ago detailing exactly how an exasperated mom could not get her teenage son to dress correctly for the occasion, in this instance meaning the dead of winter. She was advised that since it was a situation where he could not get sick or injured since the presence of germs is what makes us ill,
to just let it go and let him dress the way he wanted since only he would suffer the mild consequences. In other words, mom was being told to pick her battles and since this was not a
major one, to just let it go. It was part of him establishing his identity and doing what he perceived as being cool.
Having myself growing up in the baby boom era, I thought back to when I was a teenager and how nobody under dressed for the elements; we were more concerned with being warm. Could this be related to what one author deemed "the dumbing down of America" where
current generations make less intelligent decisions than prior ones or am I just getting old?
To take a page from Shakespear's "Hamlet"; to be warm or to be cool, that is the question? Weigh in with your opinion. I'd like to hear it.

proposal to ban electronic devices while crossing street
altText
Although some people feel there are too many laws already on the books, I'm sure we'd all agree that some laws are absolutely necessary to maintain public safety. New legislation proposed by Senator Carl Kruger of Brooklyn would make it illegal to use electronic devices while crossing the street, such as iPods, cell phones, blackberrys, etc. This has certainly been one of my pet peeves since so many people are engrossed in their own world while driving and walking and as a result, inadvertently ignoring others. Many of us have seen the video circulating on you tube,
engrossed in conversation on her cell phone and as a result, walking straight into a fountain.
This seemed funny when used on a number of news stations since she was soaking wet, but un-harmed.
On the other side of the coin, consider the plight of the 21 year old who was crushed to
death by a Mack truck while standing on a street corner in Manhattan while listening to music blaring through his headphones attached to an Ipod and thus couldn't hear the truck's back up signal. The propose legislation which could easily prevent much of this activity and save lives,
was surprisingly defeated once before. It is absolutely amazing to me how many people object to what easily should be viewed as on obvious safeguard because they feel it is a violation of their rights, guaranteed by the Constitution. It's a shame these same individuals can't leave the self centered planet they live on and take some basic history lessons as to what the founding forefathers meant when they wrote this brilliant piece of legislation. Of course, any law is only as good as the amount of enforcement applied to it.
That's it! I'm going to get off my soapbox and lie down for a while. Thanks for allowing me to vent. What do you think? I'd love to know and hopefully no one will suggest legislation that will force me to keep my overly active mouth shut!!!!!!!!

ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS
altText
The Academy Award nominations were announced this week and since we're all movie
fans in this celebrity obsessed society we live in, I thought II would put my two cents in and
verbalize some of my thoughts in a few of the major categories.
Haing seen 2 of the movies in the best actor category, I would love to see veteran actor,
Jeff Bridges grab the Oscar for reprising the memorable John Wayne role in the western
classic, 'True Grit". I thought his performance outdid young Jesse Eisenberg who portrayed
Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, in an intriguing story that would interest all generations since there are over 500,000,000 users of Facebook worldwide. Other nominees include Javier Bardem
for his role in"Beautiful", James Franco, who is also co-hosting, for his noteworthy work in "127
Hours" and Colin Firth who was praised by reviewers for his role in "The Kings' Speech".
On the womens' side, there is certainly a rooting interest for Long Islanders as Island
native, Natalie Portman, is nominated for her outstanding performance in "Black Swan",
as she conveys the trials & tribulations of a ballerina in modern day ballet. Preparing for the role
Ms. Portman had to lose 20 lbs, which she certaily couldn't afford to lose, to accurately portray the
excessively thin figures that are expected of ballerinas. I certainly think her performance is OSCAR
worthy, more so than that of Michelle Williams who also gave a memorable performance in "Blue
Valentine". Other nominees in movies I haven't seen include veteran actresses, Annette Benning
for "The Kids Are Allright" and Nicole Kidman for "The Rabbit's Hole". Jennifer Lawrence received a
nomination for "Winter's Bone".
There were 10 nominees for best picture including "Black Swan", "The Social Network",
"Inception", "The Kings' Speech", "Toy Story 3", "The Fighter", 'The Kids Are Allright", 'True Grit",
"127 Hours" and "Winters' Bone". Of the 10 nominess, I personally, have seen 4 and of those,
I preferred "Inception" as the best picture with a compelling story with lots of imagination and possibilities and an under estimated performance by Leonardo DiCaprio, over "True Grit",
"The Social Network" and "Black Swan" among the 4 nominees I have seen.
What are your thoughts and opinions? Just curious!
