Suffolk County police veteran and the former chief of detectives William Doherty is now the new Chief of Department. Doherty, a 30-year veteran of the department, was promoted Tuesday to the highest-ranking sworn officer in the force.
Doherty has also served as commanding officer for Criminal Intelligence and Homeland Security and as deputy chief of patrol. His career began with the NYPD in 1992. Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina praised Doherty’s leadership, calling him “the perfect person” to guide the department’s men and women.
The promotion was announced during a leadership news conference in Hauppauge.
