Partial eclipse on Long Island

Total eclipse of the Sun. The moon covers the sun in a solar eclipse.

Monday’s total eclipse in the western and northern parts of New York State will be between 3:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m

Long Island will see a partial eclipse beginning around at 2:12 p.m., hitting 85-90% totality from Long Island at approximately 3:27 p.m. and ending at 4:37 p.m.

Some New York State parks have scheduled viewing events for Monday, including Jones Beach, Sunken Meadow and Hecksche. NASA will host a livestream of the eclipse as well.

NASA warns “it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing” except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse.

Staring straight at the Sun during partial solar eclipses can cause permanent damage to the retina, according to the American Astronomical Society.
